Science of Pain

In the upcoming Balanced Body Advanced Movement Principles’ video is section about the research done about pain.  Our nervous system creates patterns of protection around an injury.  A lot is very appropriate and necessary.  In long term recovery, these patterns can get in our way of full rehabilitation.

I realized with my meniscus tears in both knees that my tightness in my quadriceps and hips increased immensely.  I now slowly work with a proper warmup and strengthen training to improve my flexibility.  Stretching alone didn’t help.  It left me feeling more wobbly in my knees.  Standing squats, standing yoga poses and lounges has been the answer to building strength and flexibility.

Many clients with knee pain avoid strengthening.  Just recently two clients with knee pain went to the doctor’s to get it evaluated. There was no underlying knee conditions that required knee surgery.  They were hesitant to start strengthening.  Foot work is a great change to start developing that.  Standing work is essential since the knee organized differently in standing.

Some clients are stuck in their stories.  Their stories override the importance of working properly on improving from the injury.  Of course there are things as a dancer, I can never do again.  Maintaining my strength and flexibility keeps walking up stairs painfree.
