This past month in working with the concepts of the spinal engines in a live workshop and with clients, I have seen amazing progress. Inviting gentle movements to improve the oscillating movements needed in the spine has woken up deep muscles of the spine. With my 93 year old client, it is remarkable how the warmup of bringing soft rotations of the spine in different patterns of rotation changes her walking.
Many clients due to too much sitting and poor and functional support of the spine have very stiff spines. In our culture we are taught to push our bodies into extreme positions for flexibilty. It has been amazing to experience in my own body and my clients to warmup with softer movements of the spine. I feel and see more internal connections as well as an enhanced moving spine.

The Spinal Engine theory is that the human spine is the primary engine of locomotion, not just a supportive structure. It emphasizes the spine’s oscillatory movements, particularly its ability to flex, extend, and rotate, as fundamental to walking and running. Using the Pilates equipment, we are going to enhance the movement of the spine, its connection to the limbs and applications to gait.
Objectives:
- Learn the spine moves
- Address muscular imbalances and poor movements of the spine
- Improve walking skills with better spinal sequencing
- Coordination of the limbs with the Spinal engines.
